Downtown Johannesburg hasn’t always been the safest place to go walkabout, especially not with an expensive camera in hand, but things are looking up and when walking in a group, I guess there’s more of a sense of security, plus the fact that the JHB Metro are trying to get feet back into the town, by beautifying the area again. With graffiti on walls and buildings being renovated, it has also become a photographer’s playground!
A Saturday morning’s outing with the JHB Photowalkers, to downtown Maboneng, produced these images. Maboneng means place of light, and is a privately developed urban neighbourhood on the east side of the Johannesburg central business district. It includes a museum, an hotel, restaurants and retail stores. It is fast becoming a very popular weekend hangout for young & old, hip or staid.
Once we have done with our photo taking, we headed to an old warehouse to learn the art of cyanotype printing – great fun! Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and low-cost process to produce copies of drawings, referred to as blueprints. The process uses two chemicals: ammonium iron(III) citrate and potassium ferricyanide.
